Astronaut Reveals Mental Health Struggle Following Wave of Harassment After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also carried well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a social media post, referring to a phone call from a mission companion in the period after the landing.
She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
The researcher, who has dedicated her work to female health science and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her lab work and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her background – was overshadowed under the tide of misogyny.
She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of survivors of assault.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after an attack during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
Finding Solid Ground
Months following reaching space, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the supporters whose support helped save her. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She added that even with the backlash, important benefits had resulted from the flight, such as increased focus on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
The Historic Journey
The fully automated New Shepard rocket departed Texas in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of space.
The diverse crew also included accomplished professionals from different industries.
