India's capital Wakes Up to Dangerous Pollution Post Festival of Lights
On Tuesday morning residents of the world's most polluted city found themselves inhaling dangerously toxic air that was classified as the "alarming" category.
Record-Breaking Pollution Levels
Multiple areas of the capital showed an AQI exceeding 500, which represents 10x the safe threshold set by the global health authority.
Particular areas, concentrations of toxic particulate matter soared to of 1,800, amounting to fifteen to twenty times exceeding healthy levels.
Pyrotechnics Ban and Current Changes
For the past four years, authorities had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during the Festival of Lights due to their significant contribution to the deadly smog that engulfs the metropolis as the cold season sets in.
Yet recently, the recently formed regional administration petitioned the judicial authority to seek a modification of the ban.
The suggestion was allowing "green crackers" – which have been criticized by environmental experts as being only approximately one-third less polluting – as a compromise between "tradition and environment".
Court Ruling and Implementation
Much to the frustration of environmental and health campaigners, the court approved the proposal, specifying that green firecrackers could be used during designated hours throughout the Diwali.
During the celebrations, there was widespread flouting of the time restrictions across the city, with minimal enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the more environmentally friendly type.
Several monitoring devices throughout the capital registered pollution reaching highest levels around the night hours to the most severe readings observed during celebrations in at least recent memory.
Cross-Border Implications
The proliferation of fireworks during Diwali also sparked a blame game with neighbouring the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab partly blaming deteriorating air quality in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles coming from India following the events.
Long-Standing Pollution Problem
Alarmingly severe concentrations of air contamination in Delhi have continued as a major issue for fifteen-plus years, with the problem gradually deteriorating.
During Diwali, the amount of toxic particles in the air has been documented to spike to 70% higher the peak levels ever recorded in China's capital, which was previously viewed as the globally most contaminated urban center.
Diverse Contamination Factors
The situation in Delhi is attributed to a convergence of different contributors including automobile exhaust, airborne particles, building projects, waste incineration and haze from farm burning in neighbouring regions of neighboring agricultural zones.
In these regions, rural residents regularly ignite agricultural waste to expedite field preparation, producing toxic haze that then gets trapped over the city as winter air descends.
Public Health and Economic Consequences
Both financial and medical impact on the roughly thirty-three million residents residing in the capital region is enormous, according to various research.
This pollution leads to high levels of neurological, cardiovascular and lung conditions, and can even lead to oncological diseases.
Air quality crisis is estimated to be accounting for ten thousand untimely mortalities each year in Delhi.
